Photographing a Lady in a Red Dress
Photographing any person can often be a challenge yet it can be very rewarding at the same time. There are many photographers who specialize in photographing models and they are not just doing portrays only.
They often consider themselves artists and their work can be found in art galleries and published in many local and national as well as international publications. It all depends on the photographer's innovative and creative techniques that make their photographs stand out and be admired.
Often a simple theme is just enough to work with and create worthy images. This is not to say that you should not put a lot of effort into your photography or be very creative with your scene's creations or props.
But simplicity seems to always work better, at least in photography. The key, as many professionals have always maintained is to show a photograph where the main subject is not overwhelmed by other elements as to almost be lost within the scene itself and your audience has a difficult time staying focused on it.
A simple theme is to capture images of a lady in a red dress, or basically any solid color. Prints don't usually have the same striking photographic presence.
There are two ways of approaching the shoot; one is to photograph a lady with a rich colored solid apparel against a rather plain backdrop. The other is to capture the same image but rendering every other element in the scene, such as the backdrop, in monochrome
Other nuances can include throwing the backdrops into out of focus highlights thus maximizing the focusing appeal of the model. You can also add color in certain key locations throughout the backdrop as well.
Speaking of backdrops, some of the best locations are those that seem to be monochrome already without any digital editing simply because of the materials from which they are made or their dull paint scheme. Concrete walls and buildings work quite well.
Other variations are to use more than one model at a time with all wearing the same color, different colors as well as variety in the model's skin tones and hair colors.
Not all dresses have to be formal, long or elegant, nor do the models have to have carefully applied makeup and have their hair elegantly arranged. The dress is to call attention because of its color and the contrast with its surroundings, the pose and the setting are what captures the imagination and keep the eyes on the image.
As you can see by the majority of the attached photographs many photographers approach the theme with a fashion shoot mindset, but it is the creativity of the photographer, the angles, perspectives, light and locations that separate some from the rest.
This is what you should aim for. Make your images stand out and let your creative juices flow by thinking out of the box and sticking to accepted routines. Be an artist who is also a photographer striving to intertwine both disciplines into one.
